NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils: Review & Swatches!

Today's post is dedicated to one of the most popular eyeshadow bases around: NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils. I love these pencils because they are affordable (less than $5), extremely creamy, and come in a wide variety of shades. I want to emphasize that these are eyeshadow bases, not primers. When worn alone, they crease pretty badly, so I use something like Too Faced Shadow Insurance underneath to keep them crease free.

Milk, Pots & Pans, Iced Mocha, French Fries, Bronze, Rust, Hot Pink, Strawberry Milk, Yogurt, Lavender

I discovered the beauty of NYX Jumbo Pencils when I was looking for a hot pink eyeshadow base for a tutorial. It isn't always easy to find bright eyeshadow bases, but NYX has a great variety of them. Additionally, these are great when you want to put glitter on your lids; the creamy texture really grabs/absorbs the glitter for all-day wear.

And now for swatches!

Milk, Pots & Pans, Iced Mocha, French Fries, Bronze

Rust, Hot Pink, Strawberry Milk, Yogurt, Lavender

Overall thoughts: If you are looking for some great colors to make your eyeshadows pop more, check out these pencils. However, if you are just looking for an everyday primer, skip them... they'll crease! You can find these in stores at Ulta, or online at CherryCulture.com or NYXCosmetics.com.

xx, Allison

  3. I guess I don't understand why you'd want to use these. Are there swatches somewhere online of eyeshadows with and without these bases? Wouldn't you just want to use the regular NYX eyeshadow base since you could use ANY color on top?

  6. How do you sharpen them? All of mine have a white plastic around where they should be sharpened so i had to depot them all.

  7. Why is pots and pans smaller? I always tried to twist the eye pencils I have but to no avail and always thought they would end up running out quickly. You can twist them?

  10. pots and pans is smaller because she uses it more..

and how is she supposed to swatch on darker skin tones?

rachel, youd use these colors if you wanted to intensify the color of an eyeshadow. every color looks brighter and bolder over a white NYX base. or if you wanted to brighten-up a pink shadow, use NYX Hot Pink

  11. While I don't want to respond to such a smart ass comment I guess I didn't get my point across. I meant how do you get more out of it once you've used it down to the plastic?

  15. I purchased these then returned them when I realized how much of a trouble it was to sharpen them!!

  16. You can depot them and store in jars like paint pots. Its very simple. That would alleviate the sharpening issue. See Youtube videos (enter depotting NYX Jumbo Pencils in the Youtube search engine) on how to do so using a blow dryer to melt the product.

  17. Amarxie, how do you sharpen yours? I've bought 3 big sharpeners, and they still don't fit, what brand of sharpener to you use?
