NYX Eyeshadow in Black: Review + Swatch!

A good staple for any makeup collection is a matte black eyeshadow.  It's a great essential for smoky eyes, darkening up any look, or even using as eyeliner.  Today's featured matte black eyeshadow is NYX Black.

I like the NYX individual eyeshadow casing for similar reasons that I like MAC eyeshadow casing: it's simple, black, and all around easy to use and store.  I have also depotted some of my NYX shadows using the same method as with MAC shadows, and they work great stored in magnetic palettes.  I also like the quilted design of the powder.

The formulation of NYX Black is good.  The pigmentation is there, and it applies easily.  However, this isn't the smoothest eyeshadow formulation I've found, it almost feels a little dry in texture in comparison to other NYX shadows I've used.

I purchased this shadow because it was affordable, and because I don't use matte black eyeshadow too often, I didn't really want to splurge on anything too expensive.  For me, this works on the occasions I decide to pull it out.  However, if you are someone who uses matte black regularly, you may want to shell out an extra $10 or so and get something like MAC Carbon.

NYX eyeshadows retail for $5 and can be purchased at Ulta, NYX's website, or

Overall, this is one of the best matte black eyeshadows I've seen in its price range, but not the best I've seen all around.  If you are new to black eyeshadow and don't want to splurge on something from the department store, I think this is a good one to try out!

What is your favorite black eyeshadow?
xx, Allison

  1. I love UD' s blackout!. How would you compare it to the NYX one?

  2. its funny that i dont love my carbon as much as my other more colorful colors if that make sense!! But it is the only eyeshadow that i have hit pan on as i use it as liner or to set my liner everyday… i love it its so so black:)
