I'm back today to share another one of my NARS eyeshadow duos, Tzarine. This duo was released a couple of years ago and consists of a light golden nude and dark grey.
These two colors are very contrasting, but look beautiful together. I like using the nude color for highlighting, and the grey in the crease... however it certainly isn't a subtle combination!
The nude color has a frosty finish, while the grey is frosty with flecks of shimmer in it. Both colors have decent pigmentation, though I find that the grey isn't quite as buttery as other NARS shadows.
NARS eyeshadows come in rubberized black compact casing. I love the design of these compacts: there is a good product-to-casing ratio (as in, not an enormous case with a tiny little pot of product in it). Additionally, a full-size lid mirror is in each compact. The downside of these is that the rubberized finish attracts every fingerprint and fleck of makeup. They get dirty very quickly.
NARS eyeshadow duos retail for $34 (.14 oz/4g). While this is pretty expensive, I think a lot of people don't realize that the NARS dollar-to-weight ratio beats many of its competitors. NARS eyeshadows (in duo form) are technically less expensive than both MAC and Urban Decay.
- NARS: $34/4g = $8.50 per gram ($244 per ounce)
- MAC: $15/1.5g = $10 per gram ($300 per ounce)
- Urban Decay: $18/1.5g = $12 per gram ($360 per ounce)
Something to keep in mind when deciding whether or not to splurge!
Overall, this duo is "just okay" for me. The quality is good and the colors are pretty, but I find that the colors can be a little challenging to wear together unless you want to go super smoky or use other shadows with it (I wish it was a trio with an additional medium shade). This isn't one of my must-have duos, but for the right person it would be great.
Do you like wearing eyeshadows that really contrast each other?
